落葉性中喬木,株高約3~15公尺。族群主要集中於中、北地區。
莖幹平滑,皮孔顯著,樹皮灰褐色,枝椏多分歧。萌芽期為4~5月,葉長橢圓形、倒卵形或卵形,葉緣具粗鋸齒緣,托葉線形,細裂狀,互生於枝條,花期為2~3月,葉痕上部簇生下垂3~5朵紅色花朵,花萼鐘狀漏斗形,花瓣凹形,半開放,呈叢生或繖形花序;結果期為6~7月,果實為紅色橢圓形核果,可以鮮食。
