4. Balanophora wrightii Makino 海桐生蛇菰
Plants monoecious, 4-5.5 cm high, yellow. Leaves ovate, apex obtuse. Spadices 2.5-4 cm long; male flowers dispersed among female flowers. Male flowers pedicellate; perianth 3-merous; anthers 3, connate. Female flowers minute, densely aggregated. Japan, the Ryukyus and Taiwan. Taiwan in forests of low altitude.

In 1972, Hansen chose the name Balanophora wrightii for this species. Tam (1988) thought B. wrightii was a nude name, and selected B. torbiracola for it. That thinking was taken by Ying (1990). According to Article 32 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, Hansen's choice of B. wrightii was because Makino, in proposing this name, gave a clear and direct reference to Ito's illustration in 1887, which is effectively published. The publication can replace a written description or diagnosis in complying with Article 42.2. of the code.

草本，高5—10釐米，全株紅黃色;根莖分枝，近球形或扁球形，直徑1.5—2.2釐米，表面粗糙密被小斑點，呈近腦狀皺縮，通常有星芒狀小皮孔，頂端的裂鞘5裂，裂片三角形;花莖淺黃色，長1—5.5釐米，直徑4—8毫米;鱗苞片數枚，散生，長圓狀披針形、長圓狀卵形至闊卵形，長8—14毫米，寬5—8毫米。花雌雄同株(序);花序圓錐狀長圓形、卵狀橢圓形或卵形，長1.8—4釐米，直徑1—2釐米;雄花不規則地散生於雌花叢中，直徑2—3毫米;花被裂片3，開展，卵圓形或近圓形，內凹;聚藥雄蕊有花藥3枚，花藥橫裂，近無梗;雌花的子房卵圓形至橢圓形，或多少呈紡錘形，花柱絲狀，比子房長;附屬體倒卵形或闊卵圓形，長約1.5毫米，頂端銳尖，有時鈍或稍凹陷。花期8—12月。
產於江西、湖南、廣西、廣東、臺灣。生於較濕潤的雜木林中。日本也有分佈。模式標本采自日本。
據報導本種常寄生於海桐花屬 Pittosporum 和石斑木屬 Raphiolepis 等植物的根上。
