　　夏末初秋季節，高海拔山區的植物已是進入果實成熟期，但是依然有著少數的野花正值花季，其中以[[菊科]]的黃菀為最常見。盛花期，黃菀的莖頂密生小黃花，如同一支小黃傘矗立於山野，令人駐足欣賞一番。
　　黃菀屬多年生宿根性草本植物，生育地分布於海拔1500～3600公尺的山區。每年4～5月間，植株從地表萌發新芽，植株高度約1公尺，葉片為披針形至長卵形，葉緣具鋸齒狀，互生於直立莖。植株群落多數散生於陽光充足的開闊地、步道旁、崩塌地、[[台灣冷杉]]林緣、[[香青|玉山圓柏]]林，少數是單株成長於透光佳的[[台灣冷杉]]林、[[台灣鐵杉]]林。萌芽期的黃菀如同一般高山的草本植物，翠綠的葉片很難吸引登山人太多觀愛欣賞的眼光。
　　黃菀的花期為7～9月，莖頂抽苔許多黃色頭狀花，總苞筒狀，5枚黃色的舌狀花排於頭狀花外輪，管狀花位於中央，呈繖房花序排列。結果期為10～11月，果實為黑色具白色冠毛的圓柱形[[瘦果]]；果實成熟後，迎風飄散，地上部逐漸枯萎，落葉期為11～12月。
