1. ILEX L. 冬青屬
Shrubs or trees. Leaves alternate, simple, estipulate. Flowers small, in axillary cymes, fascicles or umbellules, usually dioecious; calyx 4-5-lobed or parted; corolla rotate, the petals free or connate at the base; stamens 4-5, adhering to the base of the corolla in the male flowers, sometimes hypogynous in the females; ovary 2-12-celled; styles 0 or very short, the stigmas free or confluent on the top of the ovary. Drupe globose, very rarely ovoid, with 2-8 stones.
Species about 150, of wide distribution; about 23 species in Taiwan.

A small evergreen tree, branchlets slender. Leaves chartaceous, elliptic or lanceolate, 5-8 cm long, 1.2-2.5 cm broad, the apex long caudate, the margins serrate; petioles 6-8 cm long. Flowers in axillary clusters. Drupe red, globose, 4-5 mm across, fruiting pedicel 2-3 mm long.
Endemic. In central mountains at medium altitudes. 800M

A small to medium-sized tree; branchlets glabrescent. Leaves oblong to ovate-elliptic, 6-10 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm broad, the apex abruptly long-caudate, glabrous on both surfaces, the veinlets obscure, the margins remotely serrate; petioles 1-1.5 cm long, slender. Flowers in axillary clusters. Drupe globose, 5-7 mm across; pyrenes 2-4. Southeastern China, Hainan, and the Ryukyus. Taiwan, in northern and central parts, in forests at medium altitudes (about 900 m). TAIPEI: Keelung, Faurie 1015. TAICHUNG: Yu et al. 1955. NANTOU: Wilson 9946. CHIAYI: Mt. A small evergreen tree; branchlets slender, often pubescent. Leaves elliptic or ovate-elliptic, 3-4 cm long, 1-2 cm broad, the apex abruptly acuminate or caudate, glabrous on both surfaces, the margins entire; petioles 2-3 mm long. Flowers in axillary clusters. Drupe globose, 5-7 mm across; stigma capitate.
Endemic. Taiwan, in forests at medium altitudes.

Small evergreen trees, branchlets subterete glabrous. Leaves coriaceous, obovate to obovate-elliptic, 4-8 cm long, 2-4.5 cm broad, abruptly short-acuminate or obtuse at the apex, glabrous on both surfaces, ?the lateral nerves 6-9 pairs, obscure; petioles about 1 cm long. Flowers in axillary clusters. Drupe red, globose, 7-12 cm across; fruiting pedicels 5-10 mm long.
Korea, Japan and the Ryukyu. Taiwan, known from Is. Lanyu.

A small evergreen tree; branchlets glabrous. Leaves ovate, 5-8 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm broad, the apex acuminate, the margins crenulate or entire, the midrib and veins often strongly prominent beneath; petioles 1-1.5 cm long. Flowers in axillary cymes; pedicels slender, 10 cm long. Fruiting pedicels 2.5-5.5 cm long.
Japan, central and eastern China. Taiwan, in the west-central parts of the island at high altitudes (about 3,000 m).

Leave oblong or oblanceolate, 4-5.5 cm long, 1.5-2 cm broad, the apex acute, the margins subentire or remotely serrate, the veins inconspicuous on both surfaces. Flowers in short, axillary cymes. Drupe globose, 4-5 mm across; pyrenes 4-5, the endocarp sublignescent.
Southern and eastern China. Taiwan, in northern and central part at low altitudes.

A small evergreen tree, branchlets glabrous. Leaves coriaceous, elliptic, 4-5.5 cm long, 1.2-2.2 cm broad, obtuse or very shortly acuminate at the apex, acute or cuneate at the base; margin entire or loose serrate, glabrous on both surfaces; petioles 4-6 mm long. Flowers in axillary clusters. Drupe red, globose about 4 mm across, fruiting pedicel 3-4 mm long.
Endemic. In central mountains at medium altitudes throughout the island.
