Evergreen small trees. Twigs grayish brown, later dark brown, terete; young twigs green, glabrous, ridged below petioles. Terminal buds glabrous, ovoid, apex acute. Leaves: blades coriaceous, oblong or obovate, 4-13 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, apex acuminate to caudate with apiculate tip, base acute to attenuate, margin slightly recurved, crenulate with teeth 1-4 mm apart; both surfaces glabrous; midrib impressed above, prominent beneath; nerves 6-7 pairs, slightly prominent or indistinct beneath; petioles glabrous, 5-12 cm long. Inflorescence axillary, a raceme usually clustered near the end of branches, 1-5 cm long; axis pilose or almost glabrous; bracts caducous, ovate to widely ovate, 4-5 mm long, glabrous or appressed hairy, apex obtuse or acute, margin ciliate; bracteoles 2, caducous, ovate to narrowly triangular, keeled, apex acute to acuminate, appressed hairy on the midrib, 2-2.5 mm long, margin ciliate and often with a few glands at the base; pedicels pilose or glabrous, to 3 mm long. Flowers: calyx tube glabrous, ca. 2 mm high; limb 1.5-2 mm long; lobes valvate, triangular, 1-1.5 mm long, apex acute or obtuse, margin ciliate; corolla white, 6-7 mm long, deeply 5-lobed, tube 0.5-1 mm long, lobes elliptic; stamens connated at base, 20-30; disk glabrous, annular to shortly cylindrical; style glabrous, 7-8 mm long; ovary 3-locular. Fruits ovoid, crowned by persistent calyx lobes, 7-9 mm long, ca. 6 mm in diameter.
Distributed in Taiwan and S. China; only two specimens have been known from the central part of Taiwan.

美山礬 Symplocos decora Hance
常绿小乔木，高4-6米；嫩枝初被白蜡层，呈灰白色，旋即脱落呈紫黑色。叶革质，卵形、椭圆形或倒卵状椭圆形，长4-11厘米，宽2.5-4厘米，先端具短突尖而尖头钝，基部阔楔形或圆形，边缘具浅锯齿，中脉在叶面凹下，侧脉不明显；叶柄长0.5-1厘米。总状花序生于枝端叶腋，不分枝，长3-6厘米，无毛或稍被柔毛；苞片近圆形，直径约5毫米，早落，（不易见到），小苞片早落（在花蕾时可以见到），长圆状披针形，长3-5毫米，宽约1.2毫米，有中肋，有缘毛；花梗长0.8-5毫米，有关节；花萼无毛，长3-4毫米，萼筒倒圆锥形，裂片三角状卵形，与萼筒等长；花冠白色，芳香，长5-7毫米，5深裂几达基部；雄蕊约25枚，花丝基部联生；花盘环状，无毛；子房3室。核果坛形，长6-9毫米，顶端有环状凸起和宿存的花柱基部，宿萼裂片直立或稍向内伏；核约有3-7条纵棱。花期3-5月，果期7-10月。
产浙江、广东、广西。生于侮拔500-1800米的杂林或山谷边，或栽培、在公园中，模式标本采自广东香港公园内。

山礬 Symplocos sumuntia Buch.-Ham. ex D. Don
乔木，嫩枝褐色。叶薄革质，卵形、狭倒卵形、倒披针状椭圆形，长3.5-8厘米，宽1.5-3厘米，先端常呈尾状渐尖，基部楔形或圆形，边缘具浅锯齿或波状齿，有时近全缘；中脉在叶面凹下，侧脉和网脉在两面均凸起，侧脉每边4-6条；叶柄长0.5-1厘米。总状花序长2.5-4厘米，被展开的柔毛；苞片早落，阔卵形至倒卵形，长约1毫米，密被柔毛，小苞片与苞片同形；花萼长2-2.5毫米，萼筒倒圆锥形，无毛，裂片三角状卵形，与萼筒等长或稍短于萼筒，背面有微柔毛；花冠白色，5深裂几达基部，长4-4.5毫米，裂片背面有微柔毛；雄蕊25-35枚，花丝基部稍合生；花盘环状，无毛；子房3室。核果卵状坛形，长7-10毫米，外果皮薄而脆，顶端宿萼裂片直立，有时脱落。花期2-3月，果期6-7月。
产江苏、浙江、福建、台湾、广东（海南）、广西、江西、湖南、湖北、四川、贵州，云南。生于海拔200-1500米的山林间。尼泊尔、不丹、印度也有。模式标本采自尼泊尔。 根、叶、花均药用；叶可作媒染剂。
