1. Gaultheria itoana Hayata 高山白珠樹

A small evergreen shrub; stems and branchlets pubescent to glabrescent. Leaves thickly chartaceous, short-petiolate, oblong, 10-15 mm long, 3-7 mm broad, acute to obtuse, acute at base, serrate and slightly recurved on margins, glabrous, the midrib and veins impressed to indistinct above, slightly raised to obscure beneath, the lateral veins 2-3 per side, inconspicuous; petioles scarcely 1 mm long. Flowers in pseudo-terminal racemes about 2 cm long; pedicels 2-3 mm long; bracts usually 2, ovate, about 2 mm long, acute, pubescent, persistent; calyx 5-lobed, the lobes ovate; corolla white, ovoid-tubular, 4-5 mm long, the lobes minute; ovary pubescent. Berry globose, white, about 6 mm thick.

Endemic, in central ranges, on high mountain peaks in open places at altitudes of 2,250-3,600 m or higher.

Gaultheria itoana is very close to G. borneensis Rendle (Including G. benguetensis Copel.) of the Philippines and Borneo, but differs by a shorter distinctly globose-suburceolate corolla (see Sleumer, Fl. Males. I. 6(5): 679. 1967).
