14. Hypericum taihezanense Sasaki 短柄金絲桃
Perennial herb 0.15-0.4 m tall, ascending, ± creeping and rooting at base, ± branched above; stems ± caespitose, terete, eglandular. Leaves sessile or shortly petiolate with petiole to 0.7 mm long; lamina 0.4-1.7(2) cm long, 0.2-0.6 cm broad, triangular-lanceolate or ovate to obovate, apex rounded, base cordate-amplexicaul to cuneate, chartaceous, paler or glaucous beneath, with 3-4 ascending lateral veins and fine ± lax reticulate venation rather dense intramarginal dark glands numerous laminar glandular dots, varying in size, only pale. Inflorescence 1- ca. 10-flowered, subcorymbose to cylindric (including flowering, branches); flowers 5-10 mm in diam., concave, in bud ellipsoid, obtuse; sepals 3-5.5 mm long, 1-1.5 mm broad, lanceolate to narrowly oblong or linear, obtuse to rounded, entire, with ± dense intramarginal dark sometimes also pale glands and few laminar dots and ± elongate streaks, all pale, ascending in fruit; petals (3-)5-6(-8) mm long, 2-3.5 mm broad, obovate-oblong, mid-yellow, persistent, with small dark sessile to stalked marginal glands near apex only or round upper half and few or no laminar pale glands or streaks; stamen fascicles 3, persistent, each with an average of 7-10 stamens; anthers yellow, with black gland; ovary 3 mm long, ovoid, 3-locular, the styles longer (1-1.5 mm), free, spreading or ascending from base. Capsule 4-5(-6.5) mm long, 4-4.5 mm broad, ovoid to suborbicular, with longitudinal vittae; seeds 0.5-0.6 mm long, dark brown, finely scalariform-reticulate, not carinate, without terminal appendage.

On the basis of work by J. Kudo (in Bull. Natl. Sci. Mus., Tokyo, Ser. B. 13: 69-80. 1987) it is clear that the Taiwan plants, although closely related to the more southern Japanese species of the H. pseudopetiolatum group. Viz. H. kiusianum Koidz., differ from it interalia in capsule shape and habit. They should therefore be treated as a separate species, H. taihezanense.
