4. MICROTROPIS Wallich ex Meissner. 假衛矛屬
Evergreen trees or shrubs; branchlets glabrous. Leaves opposite, petiolate, estipulate, entire, coriaceous. Flowers in cymes or fascicled, pedunculate, axillary; sepals 4-5, persistent; petals 4-5, confluent with the disc or on the edge, the filaments short; disc conspicuous, cupular; ovary free, ovoid, 2-celled, the style short, the stigma 4-lobed; ovules 2 in each locule. Fruit a capsule, oblong, 1-celled, 2-valved, 1-seeded. About 70 species in India, Malaysia, China, Japan and in Central America and Mexico. Two species in Taiwan.

Small shrubs or trees; branchlets terete. Leaves coriaceous, shining, ovate elliptic to rhombic, 6-10 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, obtuse to subemarginate at the apex, the margins entire; petioles 3-5 mm long. Cymes axillary, 2-10 mm long; peducles very short. Capsule ellipsoid or oblong, erect, septically dehiscent into 2 valves, the valves 1.5-2.5 cm long. Japan and the Ryukyus. Taiwan, known from the islet Lanyu, and Nanjenshan, Pingtung. PINGTUNG: Nanjenshan, Chang s. n. TAITUNG: Lanyu, Miyake s. n. 1899 (Type of Cassine kotoensis Hayata), Hsu & Chuang 2331.
