17. Symplocos morrisonicola Hayata 玉山灰木
Small trees. Twigs slender, dark brown, terete; young twigs densely rusty or red-brown tomentellous to appressed pubescent, ridged below petioles. Terminal buds obliquely ovoid to subulate, appressed pubescent, apex acuminate to caudate and usually curved, 2-3 mm long. Leaves: blades coriaceous or thinly coriaceous, ovoid to lanceolate, 1.5-10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, apex acute to caudate with apiculate tip, base rounded, cuneate or acute and more or less attenuate, margin slightly recurved, entire or crenate-serrate, with teeth 2-10 mm apart; both surface glabrous or rarely sparsely hairy on midrib beneath at the base of leaves; upper surface shining ; midrib prominent on both surfaces; nerves 4-8 pairs; petioles narrowly winged, glabrous or rarely sparsely appressed hairy, 1-5 mm long. Inflorescence an axillary raceme, loosely (1-)3-7-flowered, to 2 cm long; pedicels 0-4 mm long; the axis and pedicels appressed hairy with same indument as twigs; bracts and bracteoles ovate to triangular, 0.8-1.5 mm long, apex obtuse or acute, keeled, adaxially glabrous, abaxially with same indument as inflorescence axis. Flowers: calyx appressed hairy, the tube obconical to cylindrical, 1-1.5 mm high, the limb 2-2.5 mm long, the lobes valvate, ovate to hemi-elliptic, 1-1.5(-2) mm long, margin ciliate; corolla white 4-6 mm long, deeply 5-lobed, the lobes elliptic; stamens pentadelphous, 25-50(-60); disk short cylindrical, nearly flat, tomentose; style hairy or sometimes glabrous, 6-9 mm long; ovary 3-locular. Fruits ellipsoid, crowned by the persistent calyx limb, 3-locular, 11-12 mm long, 6-7mm in diameter excluding the calyx limb; stone ellipsoid, longitudinally shallowly grooved, mesocarp thin, endocarp woody. Seeds 1(-2) in each locule, straight with straight embryo.
Endemic, 400-3,000 m altitude.

This species is closely related to S. anomala in the continental China, but the latter is distinguished from this species, by having thicker twigs, larger terminal buds, oblong leaves, shorter and imbricate calyx lobes, and more stamens.The leaf shape is very variable, and it is hard to regard these forms as significant taxa.

台灣山礬 Symplocos morrisonicola Hayata
常綠灌木；小枝、花序、苞片、花萼均被褐色短柔毛。 葉薄革質，卵形或長圓形，長3-5厘米，寬1.5-2厘米，先端急尖而具芒，基部圓形或寬楔形，全緣或有不明顯的疏淺鋸齒，中脈、側脈及網脈在葉面均凸起，側脈每邊4-8條。 總狀花序腋生，長0.5-1.5厘米；花萼長約2.5毫米，裂片長於萼筒，有睫毛；花冠長約5毫米，5深裂幾達基部，裂片橢圓形；頂端圓；雄蕊約25枚，花絲基部合生成五體雄蕊；花盤環狀有毛。 核果圓柱狀橢圓形，長約8毫米，直徑約4毫米，頂端宿萼裂片張開。 產台灣。 生於海拔2500米的林中。

薄葉山礬 Symplocos anomala Brand
小乔木或灌木；顶芽、嫩枝被褐色柔毛；老枝通常黑褐色。叶薄革质，狭椭圆形、椭圆形或卵形，长5-7（11）厘米，宽1.5-3厘米，先端渐尖，基部楔形，全缘或具锐锯齿，叶面有光泽，中脉和侧脉在叶面均凸起，侧脉每边7-10条，叶柄长4-8毫米。总状花序腋生，长8-15毫米，有时基部有1-3分枝，被柔毛，苞片与小苞片同为卵形，长1-1.2毫米，先端尖，有缘毛；花萼长2-2.3毫米，被微柔毛，5裂，裂片半圆形，与萼筒等长，有缘毛；花冠白色，有桂花香，长4-5毫米，5深裂几达基部；雄蕊约30枚，花丝基部稍合生；花盘环状，被柔毛；子房3室。核果褐色，长圆形，长7-10毫米，被短柔毛，有明显的纵棱，3室，顶端宿萼裂片直立或向内伏。花果期4-12月，边开花边结果。 产江南各省，东自台湾，西南至西藏。生于海拔1000-1700米的山地杂林中。越南也有。模式标本采自四川南川。
