1a. var. superba. 木荷
Large trees; branches grayish brown or reddish brown, villous when young. Leaves chartaceous, oblong, 7-10 cm long, 2.5-4 cm wide, apex acute or shortly acuminate, the base obtuse, margins crenulate, serrate-crenulate or awned-crenulate, glabrous, midrib shallowly impressed above, the veins distinct on both surfaces; petioles 1.5-2 cm long. Flowers in the uppermost and racemosely crowded on the tip of the branchlets, pedicels stout, 1-1.5 cm long; calyx 5-lobed, lobes subequal, semiorbicular, coriaceous, 2.5-3 mm long, densely pubescent or glabrous without, margins ciliate; stamens numerous, 6-8 mm long, connate at the base; petals 5, obovate, 1.2-1.8 cm long, connate below into a short tube, pubescent at base; ovary ovoid, densely pubescent below, glabrescent above. Fruit a capsule, globose to depressed-globose, 1-1.4 cm in diameter, pubescent; seeds flat, reniform, narrowly winged, 7-9 mm long, 4.5-5 mm wide.
Mainland China, the Ryukyus and Taiwan. Taiwan, in broad-leaved forests throughout the island.
