1. Camellia brevistyla (Hayata) Coh.-Stuart 短柱山茶
Small trees; young branchlets pubescent, glabrescent with age. Leaves elliptic-oblong, 4-5 cm long, 2 cm wide, acute or obtuse at both ends, glabrous on both sides, the margins crenulate, slightly recurved, entire toward the base, the midrib prominent above, the veins impressed; petiole 5 mm long, furrowed, pubescent. Flowers axillary, solitary, sessile, 3 cm across; sepals 5, deciduous, unequal, broadly ovate, 6-8 mm long; petals 5, obovate, 1.5 cm long, 1 cm wide, pubescent without, apex emarginate; stamens about 30, 2-seriate, outer ones longer, filaments mostly as half long as the petals, connate at base; ovary globose, pilose, 1.5 mm in diameter; styles 4, very short, 1 mm long, connate the base, recurved at the apex.
Taiwan, at medium altitudes.

5. Camellia hengchunensis Chang 恆春山茶
Small trees; branches and branchlets terete, glabrous. Leaves thickly coriaceous, obovate-elliptic, 4-5.5 cm long, 2-2.5 cm broad, acute or obtuse at apex, cuneate at base, loosely serrate in upper half, glabrous on both surfaces, the midrib elevated above, lateral veins slightly impressed above, indistinct beneath; petioles 4-6 mm long. Flowers terminal, sessile, solitary or in pairs, white, 2.5 cm across; bracts 3-4; sepals orbicular, 4-5 mm long, pubescent outside; petals elliptic-obovate; 2 cm long, 6 mm wide, emarginate, cuneate at base, glabrous; stamens numerous, anthers versatile, filaments glabrous, 0.5-1 cm long; ovary subglobose, 1.5 mm long, densely pilose; style 5 mm long, glabrous, 3-fid at apex.
Endemic, confined to the southernmost part of Taiwan.
