A small tree or shrub, glabrous, densely branched, young branchlets slightly 4-angular. Leaves opposite, coriaceous, oblong to obovate, obtuse or emarginate at the apex, acute to attenuate at base, 2-3.5 cm long, 1-1.2 cm broad, lateral veins numerous, inconspicuous; petioles 2-5 mm long. Flowers in terminal few-flowered cymes or paniculate; pedicels about 2 mm long; calyx campanulate, lobes 4, very short with two small bracts at base, bracts caducous; petals 4, free, small; ovules 4 in each cell. Fruit globose, 7-10 mm in diameter.
Southern China, the Ryukyus and the Bonin Islands. In Taiwan, in thickets at low to medium altitudes throughout the island.

赤楠 Syzygium buxifolium Hook. et Arn.
灌木或小喬木;嫩枝有棱，幹後黑褐色。葉片革質，闊橢圓形至橢圓形，有時闊倒卵形，長1.5—3釐米，寬1—2釐米，先端圓或鈍，有時有鈍尖頭，基部闊楔形或鈍，上面幹後暗褐色，無光澤，下面稍淺色，有腺點，側脈多而密，脈間相隔1—1.5毫米，斜行向上，離邊緣1—1.5毫米處結合成邊脈，在上面不明顯，在下面稍突起;葉柄長2毫米。聚傘花序頂生，長約1釐米，有花數朵;花梗長1—2毫米;花蕾長3毫米;萼管倒圓錐形，長約2毫米，萼齒淺波狀;花瓣4，分離，長2毫米;雄蕊長2.5毫米;花柱與雄蕊同等。果實球形，直徑5—7毫米。花期6—8月。
產安徽、浙江、臺灣、福建、江西、湖南、廣東、廣西、貴州等省區。生於低山疏林或灌叢。分佈于越南及日本琉球群島。
