6. Begonia formosana (Hayata) Masamune

6a. f. formosana. 水鴨腳

A succulent herb with creeping rhizomes, up to 50 cm high. Leaves obliquely ovate, 15-21 cm long, 8-18 cm broad, long-petiolate, unequally cordate at base, acuminate at apex, the margins irregularly remotely or doubly dentate, subglabrous or very slightly scabrous above, palmately 8 to 10-nerved; petioles 5-12 cm long, 3-5 cm in diam.; stipules ovate, membraneous, 0.6-2.2 cm long, 0.4-1.2 cm broad. Peduncles very long, axillary divided into dichotomous cymes, 3 to 4-flowered, 4-5 cm in diam. Staminate flowers pale-pink; tepals 4, the two outer ones larger, broadly oblong, 1.5-2.2 cm long, 1.2-2 cm broad, the two inner ones smaller, obovate, 1.5-1.8 cm long, 0.6-0.8 cm broad; stamens numerous, 4 mm long, yellow. Pistillate flower with 5 tepals; ovary inferior, 3-celled; styles 2, bifid at apex; stigma bent like a corkscrew. Fruit capsular, 3-winged, the abaxial wing much protruded as compared with the two lateral wings. Seeds minute and very numerous.

Distributed in Taiwan and the Ryukyus. Very common at altitudes from 300 to 1,000 m throughout the island; flowering from May to October.

6b. f. albomaculata Liu & Lai in Fl. Of Taiwan 3: 795, 1977. 白斑水鴨腳

It differs from the type in having white spots on the upper surface of leaves and a short stiff hair on each spot.

Endemic. Frequently growing together with the typical form; flowering from May to October.
