3. Vitis thunbergii Sieb. & Zucc.
Branchlets angular; petioles and mature leaves rusty-cobwebby, tomentose or rusty whitish and becoming glabrate; tendrils intermittent. Leaves cordate, 3-5-lobed or not lobed, 2-3.5 cm long, 2-4.5 cm broad, chartaceous to thin coriaceous, broad to ovate, acute or acuminate with broad and round sinuses, mucronate to dentate, basal sinus deep and narrow, 0.3-1.5 cm wide, 0.6-1.8 cm deep, glabrous above, densely and cobwebby-tomentose beneath; petioles 1-3 cm long. Thyrse 5-8 cm long. Berry small, 2-3-seeded, 5-8 mm across. China, Korea and Japan. Taiwan, nearly throughout the island.
3a. var. thunbergii. 細本葡萄
A variety, with leaves about 5.5 cm long and 4.5 cm wide, is represented by the nomenclatural type of Vitis thunbergii Sieb. & Zucc.

3b. var. taiwaniana Lu 小葉葡萄
A variety characterized by much smaller leaves and longer thyrse. This variety was formerly referred to Vitis adstricta Hance or Vitis thunbergii. var. adstricta Gagnep., but it is quite different from the latter as its leaves are 2-3.5 cm long, and cordate-ovate in shape but not "3.5 poll. Longis (about 8 cm long)" and "triangulato-ovatis". It is evident that these plants are not referrable to Vitis adstricta.
