1. Elaeocarpus argenteus Merr. 腺葉杜英

A tree, glabrous throughout except the inflorescences. Branchlets terete, brown; leaves coriaceous, elliptic-oblong, 6.5-8 cm long, acuminate at the apex, obtuse or sometimes acute at the base, the margins crenate, the lateral veins about 5-6 on each side of the midrib, the midrib elevated on both surfaces, the axils mostly prominently glandular beneath; petioles 1.5-2 cm long, slightly swollen at each end. ?Inflorescence axillary, 5-7 cm long, racemose, the rachis densely pubescent; pedicels 5-6 mm long, densely appressed-pubescent; flower-buds elliptic, the apex acute, about 4 mm long; sepals 5, lanceolate, 4 mm long, with densely minute grey pubescent outside, keeled within; petals oblong-obovate, 4 mm long, the upper one third fimbriate, the back silvery sericeous, the margins and lower part of the inner surfaces white-villous; stamens about 28, the anthers linear, 2 mm long, pubescent, with the outer valve slightly longer than the inner one, the filaments about 1 mm long, villous; ovary ovoid, villous, 2-celled; style glabrous towards the upper part. 2 mm long; disc villous. Fruit ovoid, about 8 mm long, 6 mm across, glabrous, the pedicels 9 mm long.

The Philippines. Taiwan, found only on the Islets Lanyu and Lutao.

The leaf characters of this species are quite similar to that of E. japonicus, but it can be differentiated by the presence of glands in most of the vein axils and also by the shorter petioles.
