2. Momordica cochinchinensis (Lour.) Spreng. 木虌子

A perennial glabrescent vine with tuberous roots. Leaves membranceous, more or less symmetrical, ovate to orbicular, deeply 3-lobed, often with very shallow lobe on each side, the terminal one ovate to oblong-lanceolate 10-20 long and wide, acute to apiculate at the apex, cordate at the base with a gland on sinus margin on each side near petiole, scarcely at the margins, glabrescent; petioles 5-10 cm long, often with a gland on each side. Flowers dioecious, yellowish cream white, solitary on peduncles 3-12 cm long, staminate flowers sometimes 3-5 in an axillary racemose, peducle bearing a 3-5 x 5-8 cm pubescent reniform entire bract near summit and enclosing the flower; calyx segments ovate; corolla lobes obovate-oblong, 3-6 mm long, 1-3 cm wide. Fruits green, becoming reddish orange at maturity, not ribbed, short-spiny or muricate, ovoid-oblong 10-15 cm long, 5-7 cm wide.

India, Indo-China, Malesia, and southern China. Taiwan, throughout the island, especially abundant in the south, mainly in lowland woods and raves.
