2. Gaultheria cumingiana Vidal 白珠樹
Small shrubs; branchlets glabrous. Leaves thick chartaceous, short petiolate, ovate, 5-8 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm broad, apex acuminate, base obtuse to rounded or subcordate, serrate, glabrous, upper surface green, lower surface slightly paler, midrib and veins prominent and raised on both surfaces, lateral veins ca. 3 pairs; petiole 3-5 mm long, thick, glabrous. Racemes axillary, glabrous, to 5 cm long; pedicel 4-5 mm long; bracts 2, minute, acuminate; calyx lobes triangular, margin ciliate; corolla campanulate, ca. 7 mm long, 5-lobed; stamens 10, anther cells awned. Fruit a globose berry, ca. 7 mm thick, dark purple.
Southern China and Philippines. Taiwan, on high mountains from 2,500 to 3,300 m in central ranges; also in vicinity of Taipei from about 450 to 1,500 m around hot sulfur springs.
