A low perennial herb. Stems simple, ascending, usually caespitose, glabrous, 3-13 cm tall. Leaves plicate, closely crowded on stems, especially so on stems bearing no flowers, ovate, 5-6 mm long, 2.5-3 mm wide, aristate-acute at apex, the costae prominent beneath, the margins white, obscurely denticulate-scabrous; sheaths hyaline, 1 mm long. Flowers usually solitary and terminal, 17-22 mm long; calyx-tube campanulate-tubuliform, 6-8 mm long, with 5 smooth costae, the lobes thick, narrowly triangular, 3-4 mm long, acuminate at apex, the inner lobes of sinuses acute; corolla purplish, tubular-campanulate, 17-22 mm long, 5-lobed, the lobes broadly ovate, 3-4 mm long, obtuse at apex, the sinuses plicate with triangular appendages, the appendages rotundate-truncate at apex, and with undulate-dentate tip; stamens 5, the anthers linear, 2-3 mm long, the filaments attached to the middle of the corolla-tube; ovary stalked, fusiform- oblanceolate, the style 2-3 mm long, 2-fid, usually spirally recurved in fruiting stage; stipe about 6 mm long. Capsules long-stipitate, obovate, about 6 mm long, exserted beyond the persistent corolla, 2-valved, dehiscent, the valves denticulate on margins; stipe 1.6-2 mm long; seeds narrow-oblong, about 1 mm long, with longitudinal reticulate-striae. The present species is readily distinguishable by the simple stems, caespitose at base, and by the plicate leaves closely crowded on stems, especially so on vegetative branches. In addition, it is quite distinct from other Taiwan species of the genus in the following characteristics. The calyx-lobes are thick, narrowly triangular, shorter than the calyx-tube, the corolla is purplish, and the lobes are broadly ovate, obtuse at apex, the appendages are trianguloid, rotundate- truncate at apex, and with undulate-dentate tips, the filaments are attached to the middle part of the corolla-tube, and the ovary is borne on a stipe about 6 mm long.
