1. Illicium anisatum L. 白花八角
Shrubs or trees, 2-8 m tall. Young branchlets 1.5-3 mm in diam. Leaves alternate or clustered at apex and nodes of branchlets; petioles 7-20 mm long; lamina narrowly obovate, narrowly oblong-elliptic or elliptic, 4-12 cm long, 1.5-4 cm broad, coriaceous, base attenuate, margin slightly recurved, apex acute to gradually acuminate, costa raised on upper surface, 2-2.5 mm wide, prominent beneath, secondary nerves 4-7 per side, prominent or obscure on both surfaces. Flower buds ovoid; flowers axillary or congested toward apex of branchlets; pedicel 5-15 mm long. Perianth segments 15-24, whitish or yellowish, elliptic, obovate-oblong, narrowly oblong or lingulate, flat, thin-carnose. Stamens ?16-25, usually in 2-series, connective slightly emarginate to obtuse-cuspidate. Carpels 7-9(-10), 3.5-5 mm long; stigma 2-3.3 mm long. Fruit 2.5-3 cm in diam.; pedicel 10-25 mm long, 1.5-2 mm in diam.; follicles 7-8, apex rostrate, rostrum 2-4 mm long. Seeds yellowish, 6-7 mm long. Fl. Dec.-Mar.; fr. July-Oct. Chromosome number n=14.
2. Illicium philippinense Merr.
Shrub or tree to 8 m. Leaves coriaceous, lanceolate or narrowly oblong-elliptic, 5-10 cm long, 2-4 cm broad, acute to obtuse, attenuate at base, the margins slightly recurved, the lateral veins 5-7 per side; petioles 7-15 mm long, distally winged. Flowers axillary, the pedicels 5-14 mm long; perianth segments 15-21, the outermost thin-papyraceous, the inner membranaceous, the largest to 17 x 4.5 mm; stamens 16-23, usually 2-seriate, 2.5-3.5 mm long, the filaments carnose; carpels 8, rarely 9 or 10, the style subulate, 2-3.3 mm long. Mature carpels 6-8, 13-16 mm long, the pedicels not thickened, up to 25 mm long.

Shrub or small tree, to 8 m height. Leaves ± coriaceous, elliptic, 5—7(—9) by 2-4 cm, midrib ± raised above and ± prominent below, apex acute to acuminate, base attenuate, margins ± revolute; petioles 8-10 mm long, groove ± absent on adaxial surface. Flowers axillary on young growth, generally solitary or few in clusters; pedicels 5-15 mm long at anthesis. Perianth parts 15-27, white, outermost perianth parts ovate, c. 4.5 by 2.5-3 mm, largest perianth parts narrowly elliptic, 9-14 by 3.3-4.5 mm, innermost perianth parts ovate, c. 4.5 by 3 mm. Androecium of (11 —)16 —25 stamens, biseriate; stamens 2.2-2.5-2.9mm long; pollen grains trizonocolpate. Gynoecium of 9-11 carpels; carpels 3.3-3.7-4.5 mm long. Fruit of up to 11 follicles.
常緑樹で、高さは10メートル程度、胸高直径は30センチメートルとなる。樹皮は暗い灰褐色になり、老木になると縦の裂け目を生じる。若枝は緑色。葉は、枝の先端に集まってつき、短い葉柄を持つ楕円形から倒卵形を帯で、長さ5-10センチメートル、深緑色でつやがある。葉の質はやや厚く、何となく波打ったようになることが多い。葉の先端は急に突き出して鈍端。花は葉の付け根から一つずつ出て春に咲く。花びらは淡黄色で細長く、ややねじれたようになる。果実は扁平で周囲に8本の突起が出ている。上面が裂開し種子が出る。種子は褐色でつやがあり、小さいドングリを押しつぶしたような形をしている。
