3. PALIURUS Mill. 馬甲子屬

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate, petioled, entire or serrate, 3-nerved from base, the stipules usually changed into spines. Flowers bisexual, in axillary or sometimes terminal cymes; sepals 5, triangular, valvate; petals 5; stamens 5, the anthers versatile; ovary partly immersed in the disc, generally 3-celled with 3 stigmas. Fruit dry, depressed-subglobose with a broad orbicular horizontal wing, 1-seeded.

Species about six, natives of S. Europe and eastern Asia; one in Taiwan.
