4. Begonia chitoensis Liu & Lai, in Fl. Taiwan 3: 793. pl. 820. 1977. 溪頭秋海棠

A succulent herb, glabrous or sparingly pubescent. Stem rather strong, 45 cm high, grooved in dried state. Leaves long-petiolate, obliquely ovate-orbicular, 15-20 cm long, 10-15 cm broad, unequally cordate at base, acute or acuminate at apex, the margins finely dentate, palmately 8-10-nerved, densely hirsute on both surface; petioles 10- 12 cm long, 0.4-0.6 cm in diam., scarlet; stipules ovate, acuminate, 8-10 mm long. Flowers in thin cymes with axillary dichotomously-branched slender peduncles. Staminate flowers with 4 tepals, pale pink, the outer two larger, broadly ovate, 1.5 cm long, 2 cm broad, the inner two smaller, 1.5 cm long, 0.8 cm broad; stamens numerous, the anther basifixed, 1 mm long, the filaments 1.5 mm long. Pistillate flowers with 5 tepals; styles 2, bifid, the stigmas papillose, ovary 3-celled. Capsules 3 cm long, 1.5 cm broad, unequally 3-winged, the abaxial wing much protruded, 20 mm long, 13 mm board, the lateral wing 18 mm long, 13 mm broad. Seeds minute and very numerous.

Endemic at altitude about 500-2,000 m, undergrowths in the forest. Flowering from June to October.
