11. Begonia taiwaniana Hayata 台灣秋海棠

A succulent stout glabrous herb; stems branched. Leaves alternate, obliquely lanceolate, 8-12 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm broad, the base unequally cordate, the apex acuminate, the margins irregularly serrulate-dentate, 5 to 7 nerved; petioles 3-9.5 cm long, 1-2 mm in diam.; stipules ovate, 3-6 mm long, 2-4 mm broad. Cymes axillary, 2 to 3 flowered. Staminate flowers, tepals 4, the two outer ones larger, obovate, 6-12 mm long, 7-10 mm broad; stamens numerous. Pistillate flowers: tepals 5, subequal, 1-14 mm long, 5-10 mm broad; styles 3, bifid at apex; stigma bent like a corkscrew. Fruit capsular, 12-18 mm long, 8-10mm broad. Unequally 3-winged, the abaxial wing broader, very larger, 17-20 mm long, 13-15 mm broad, the lateral ?wing narrowly, 4-6 mm long, 10-12 mm broad. Seeds minute and very numerous, brown-yellow.

Endemic. Woodland undergrowths restricted to the southern part of the island; flowering from June to October.
