1. Trichosanthes cucumeroides (Ser.) Maxim. ex Fr. & Sav. 王瓜
A perennial slender puberulent to glabrescent vine. Tendrils simple or bifid. Leaves membranceous to chartaceous, more or less symmetrical, suborbicular to ovate to triangular, entire, or shallowly to deeply palmately 3-5-(7-)lobed, 5-15 cm long, 4-12 cm wide, acuminate to acute at the apex, deeply cordate at the base, irregularly denticulate at the margins with mucronulate-teeth, hispid and scabrous above, villose beneath; petioles 3-10 cm long. Flowers white, bracteolate, staminate flowers racemoses, pistillate flowers solitary; perianth tube 6-7 cm long, calyx segments linear-lanceolate, 3-6 mm long; corolla lobes lanceolate, 1-2 cm long. Fruits green with 10 longitudinal greenish-white stripes, turning orange-red at maturity,globose to oblong, 5-9 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, smooth; seeds turgid, pentagonal, with an empty chamber on each side, rugulose.
Central, eastern and southern China, Japan, and Taiwan; throughout the island at altitude of 50-1600 m, in forest and woods. Flowering Apr-Aug.
