2. Syzygium densinervium Merr. var. insulare Chang 密脈赤楠

A small tree, branches glabrous, light brown or grayish, terete. Leaves obovate-oblong, thickly coriaceous, obtuse or sometimes shortly cuspidate at apex, attenuate or cuneate at base, glabrous, 6-8 cm long, 3-3.5 cm broad, lateral veins numerous, upper surface with numerous obscure glands; petioles, 1.5-2 cm long. Flowers in terminal cyme, 6 cm long, branches of inflorescence stout, ultimate branchlets short, each with about 3 flowers; petals connivent into a calyptra; calyx funnel-shaped, glabrous, with irregular short lobes, subtended by 2 small bracts; stamens numerous, glabrous; stigma undivided. Fruit ovoid-elliptic, about 1.2 cm long, 6 mm in diameter, glabrous, reddish when ripe, crowned by the calyx rim.

Species in the Philippines, the variety endemic to Lanyu (Botel Tobago) and Pingtung.
