9. Syzygium tripinnatum (Blanco) Merr. 大花赤楠
An evergreen medium tree, branchlets subterete, glabrous, ultimate branchlets much compressed. Leaves opposite, chartaceous, ovate-lanceolate or oblong, caudate or caudate-cuspidate at apex, acute or obtuse at base, 8.5-11.5 cm long, 2.2-4.0 cm broad, margins entire, glabrous, obscurely punctate, midrib impressed above, elevated below, lateral veins elevated on both surfaces, 8-11 on each side of the midrib, usually forming double definite submarginal veins; petioles 5-7 mm long, glabrous. Inflorescence usually a terminal corymbose cyme, 4-6 cm long, glabrous, subtented by 2 triangular small bracts; pedicels 1.8-2.2 cm long; calyx turbinate, lobes seborbicular, unequal, the larger ones 5 mm long, 8 mm broad, the smaller 4 mm long, 6 mm broad; petals 4, elliptic, 1.3 cm long, apex rounded; stamens numerous, filaments filiform, 1.5-2.2 cm long, anthers oblong, 2 mm long; ovary 2-celled, style-column filiform, 2.8 cm long, stigma undivided. Fruit elliptic, about 2 cm or more in diameter, red when ripe, crowned by thick calyx rim.
Philippines. Taiwan, known only from Lanyu (Botel Tobago).
