7a. Vaccinium wrightii wrightii. 大葉越橘

Leaves thickly chartaceous, ovate to oblong or rhombic-oblong, 3-5 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm broad, acuminate, broadly acute to subrounded at base, serrate, glabrous on both surfaces and nearly concolored, the midrib slightly raised on both surfaces, the lateral veins 3-4 per side, inconspicuous above, subconspicuous beneath; petioles about 2 mm long, stout, slightly pubescent to glabrescent. Flowers in terminal glabrescent racemes 7 cm long; pedicels 5-8 mm long, more or less curved; bracts leafy, 2-5 mm long, often persistent; calyx 5-lobed, the lobes triangular, glabrous; corolla campanulate-cylindric, 5-7 mm long, glabrous, shallowly 5-lobed; stamens 10, the anthers spurred, the filaments slender, flat, pilose at base. The Taiwan plant generally identified as V. donnianum proves to be the same as V. wrightii The nomenclature of this taxon in Taiwan in the literature, as well as that of the related species V. bracteatum, is very confused. Vaccinium donnianum Wight, now known as V. sprengelii (G. Don) Sleumer, has a very complicated list of synonymy. It is a species of wide distribution but is apparently confined to the mainland of southeastern Asia and absent from Taiwan. It has ebracteate racemes and is distinct, in this respect, from both V. wrightii and V. bracteatum

7b. Vaccinium wrightii var. formosanum (Hayata) Li, Woody Fl. Taiwan 704. 1963. 台灣大葉越橘

An evergreen small bush; leaves 1.5-2 cm long, 1-1.5 cm broad; petioles 1-2 mm long.

Endemic. In forests around Hualien (Kwarenko), at an altitude of about 1,600 m.

TAITUNG: Nakahara 695 (Type coll.). HUALIEN: Nakamura 3835.

Sleumer reduced V. formosanum to the synonymy of V. wrightii but without consulting any type material. This is a dwarf plant, which has consistently smaller leaves than typical V. wrightii. As it is also of restricted range, along the eastern coast, it seems deserving of recognition as a distinct variety.
