21. Symplocos shilanensis Y. C. Liu & F. Y. Lu 希蘭灰木

Evergreen small trees. Twigs grayish dark brown, terete or ridged; young twigs green, conspicuously ridged below petioles, glabrous. Terminal buds subulate 2-4 mm long, glabrous. Leaves: blades coriaceous, glabrous, elliptic to ovate, apex shortly caudate and obtuse with apiculate tip, base attenuate, 2.5-5 cm long, 1.2-2.5 cm wide, margin recurved, entire or with 2-3 pairs of crenate-serrate teeth; midrib prominent on both surfaces; nerves 4-5 pairs meeting in an intramarginal vein; petioles glabrous, 5-7 mm long, sulcate above. Inflorescence axillary, a short spike branched like a panicle or a raceme, the axis 0.5-1 cm long, glabrous; bract and bracteoles persistent, minute, ovate to orbicular, 0.5-1 mm long, keeled, glabrous, apex acute, margin ciliolate. Flowers: calyx tube, ca. 1 mm long, calyx limb 1-1.5 mm long, deeply 5-lobed, the lobes imbricate, semi-orbicular to depressed ovate, apex obtuse or rounded, glabrous except ciliolate margin; corolla white, 3-3.5 mm long, the lobes elliptic; stamens 35-50; disk pilose; style 3.5-4 mm long, glabrous; ovary 3-locular. Fruits violet, narrowly obovoid, often curved, crowned by persistent calyx lobes, 8-10 mm long excluding calyx limb, 4-5 mm in diam., 3-locular; stone smooth, mesocarp woody; seed straight with straight embryo.

Endemic (Pintung and Taitung), up to 1,100 m altitude; in thicket or forest.
