5. Swertia tozanensis Hayata 高山當藥

A small erect herb. Stems slender, branched, tetragonal and slightly 4- striate, rather minutely winged or not, glabrous, 20-25 cm tall. Leaves shortly petiolate or subsessile, oblong-lanceolate or lanceolate, 1.5-3 cm long, 5-7 mm wide, the apex obtuse, the base attenuate, trinervate, the venules reticulate. Flowers pedicellate, solitary, axillary or in racemes with few flowers, with 2 small foliaceous bracts; pedicels 1-2 cm long; calyx deeply 4-, sometimes 3-parted, the tube short, 1-1.5 mm long, the segments lanceolate, up to 5 mm long, the apex obtuse, rather reflexed, with loose ciliate-fimbriae inside at base, 3-nerved, the lateral veins free at base, the venules reticulate in the upper part; corolla rotate, 4-parted, the tube about 1 mm long, the segments oblong, 5.5-6 mm long, 2-2.5 mm wide, the apex obtuse, with 2 glandular maculas near base on both margins, the maculas loosely ciliate on margins, 5-nerved, each vein free at tip, the lateral veins convergent at base; stamens as many as corolla-lobes, the anthers globose, about 0.8 mm long, the apex obtuse, the filaments about 2 mm long; ovary lanceolate, 4.5-6 mm long; stigma sessile, 2-lobed. Capsules elongate-ovoid, about 11 mm long, the apex slightly recurved, dehiscent into 2 valves; seeds minute, globose, compressed-sinuous, 0.5-0.7 mm in diameter.

Endemic. Roadsides or under forests on mountains at altitudes of 2,300- 3,500 m in the middle part of the island.

This is a rather small plant. It is distinct by the lanceolate leaves with 3 parallel veins, the 4-merous flowers, and the corolla-lobes with 2 ciliate glandular maculas on both margins near the base. The veins of the corolla-lobes are all at the tip, and the lateral veins converge at the base.
