1. Melicope pteleifolia (Champ. Ex Benth.) T. Hartley, comb. Nov. 三腳虌

A shrub or small to medium tree. Young branchlets glabrous to pubescent, 2.5-4 mm wide in third internode. Leaves opposite, 3-foliolate, 8-37 cm long; petiole 1.5-14 cm long; leaflet blades puberulent on midrib, especially below, or glabrous, ovate-elliptic to elliptic-obovate, or narrowly so, 6-22 cm long, 2-8 cm wide, the base cuneate to attenuate, the apex acuminate or subcaudate. Inflorescences axillary and sometimes on branchlets below leaves, several- or many-flowered, 2-10 cm long. Flowers unisexual or rarely bisexual (plants dioecious or rarely monoclinous); sepals 0.5-1 mm long; petals white to green or yellow, 1.3-2 mm long; stamens 4; ovary glabrous to pubescent, the carpels connate at base, 2-ovulate. Fruit of 1-4 basally connate follicles, these glabrous to sparsely puberulent, subglobose to obovoid, (3-) 3.5-7.5 mm long, dehiscent to base. Seeds subglobose to ellipsoid, 2.5-4 mm long.

2. Melicope semecarpifolia (Merr.) T. Hartley, comb. Nov. 山刈葉

A shrub or small to medium tree. Young branchlets glabrous to pubescent, 2-10 mm wide in third internode. Leaves opposite, 3- and/or 1-foliolate. Three-foliolate leaves 5-51 cm long; petiole 1-15 cm long; leaflet blades pubescent on venation below and midrib above or grading to glabrous, elliptic to obovate or oblanceolate, 3-34.5 cm long, 1.5-15 cm wide, the base acute to subattenuate, the apex rounded or emarginate to acuminate. One-foliolate leaves 6.5-19 cm long; petiole 1-3 cm long; leaflet blade elliptic-obovate or obovate, 5.5-16 cm long, 3.3-8 cm wide; otherwise similar to 3-foliolate leaves. Inflorescences axillary and sometimes on branchlets below leaves, several- to densely many-flowered, 1.5-9.5 cm long. Flowers unisexual (plants dioecious); sepals 0.5-1.3 mm long; petals white, greenish, or pale yellow, 1.5-3 mm long; stamens 4; ovary sericeous-pubescent, the carpels connate at base, 2-ovulate. Fruit of 1-4 basally connate follicles, these sparsely pubescent or glabrate, subglobose, 4-4.5 mm long, dehiscent to base. Seeds subglobose to ellipsoid, 2.5-4 mm long.

1. Melicope pteleifolia (Champ. Ex Benth.) T. Hartley, comb. Nov. 三腳虌

TAIPEI: Neihu, Chinglong Temple, Wen et al. 255; Neihu-Waisuangchi, Kuo 4839. TAICHUNG : Alienshan, Kao 9659; Chungshinlien, Huang 560. NANTOU: Nenkao Forest, Huang & Kao 6093; Sun Moon Lake, Kuo 8301.
As seen in Taiwan, Melicope pteleifolia has glabrous or nearly glabrous young branchlets and leaves. The branchlets are about 2.5-3 mm wide in the third internode and the leaves are about 10-26 cm long with leaflet blades. About 7-17 cm long and 2-5 cm wide.

2. Melicope semecarpifolia (Merr.) T. Hartley, comb. Nov. 山刈葉

TAIPEI: Taipei, Shuangshan, Tang 964; Toutingli Zoo, Kuo 10102. ILAN: Yuanshan 2.5 km SW of Ilan City, Hsu et al. 8367; Sohei, Wilson 10283. PINGTUNG: Kenting, Chuang & Kao 3945; Kenting Park, Hsu & Hsu 4156; Nanshan road, Hsieh 1430. TAITUNG: Souka, Chuang & Kao 3495; Is. Lanyu, Huang 2749.
As seen in Taiwan, Melicope semecarpifolia has pubescent young branchlets, and the leaves, which are exclusively 3-foliolate, also have indumentum, at least when young. The branchlets are about 5-8 mm wide in the third internode and the leaflet blades are about 11-22 cm long and 4.5-9 cm wide.
