1. Gentiana angusta (Masamune) Liu & Kuo in Bull. Exp. Forest N.T.U. 114: 176. pl. 4. 1974. 狹瓣龍膽 Pl. 950 Gentiana scabrida Hayata var. angusta Masamune in Trans. Nat. Hist. Soc. Form. 29: 64. 1939.

Stems usually branched, purple or dark-purple, densely scabrous, 11-15 cm tall. Leaves aristate-acuminate at apex, slightly scabrous, the margins white, obscurely scabrous; radical leaves lanceolate or sometimes ovate, 10-20 mm long, 5-7 mm wide; cauline leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 8-15 mm long, 3-5 mm wide; sheaths about 2 mm long. Flowers pedicellate, solitary on terminal branches; pedicels 2-8 mm long. Calyx-tube campanulate, 7 mm long, with 5 scabrous costae, 5-lobed; the lobes unequal in length, nearly as long as the calyx- tube, narrowly lanceolate or lanceolate, acuminate-aristate at apex, 6-7 mm long, the margins white, minutely scabrous. Corolla campanulate, 20-25 mm long, 5-lobed, the lobes ovate, 5 mm long, aristate-acuminate at apices; sinuses plicate with ovate-triangular appendages; appendages acute or cuspidate at apices, entire or nearly so. Stamens 5, the anthers narrow, 3 mm long, the filaments attached slightly above the base of the corolla-tube. Ovary shortly stipitate, lanceolate, 10 mm long, the stipe 2-3 mm long; style 7 mm long, the stigma bifurcate. Capsules obovate, 10 mm long, the stipe 20 mm long, exserted beyond the persistent corolla. Seeds ovate, 1 mm long, winged, with minutely longitudinal reticulate-striae.

Endemic. In the northeastern part of the central mountain range at about 3,200 m in altitudes. ILAN: Nanhutashan, Masamune & Mori s. n. July 15, 1931 (Type coll of Gentiana scabrida Hayata var. angusta Masamune); Chungyangchienshan, Suzuki & Fukuyama 15164.

This species was treated by Masamune as a variety of Gentiana scabrida Hayata in 1939, but according to our observation, although it bears a close resemblance to Gentiana scabrida in external morphology, it is distinctly separable from the latter by the following characters: The radical and cauline leaves are not of the same shape, the calyx-lobes are lanceolate and unequal in length, and are nearly as long as the calyx-tube, the corolla-appendages are acute or cuspidate at apex, entire or nearly so along the margins, the filaments are attached to the corolla a little above the base, and the ovary is lanceolate and shortly stipitate.
